Totally Toronto: About Toronto : Neighbourhoods : Fashion District

Fashion District

Toronto's Fashion District is the hub of the fashion culture for the city. It has long roots, great stores, and trendy residents. The Fashion District is where you come for all your high end shopping fixes when the addiction becomes too strong!

The Fashion District is located between Bathurst Street and University Ave running along Queen Street West. But the main intersection best-known for this Toronto neighbourhood is Queen Street West and Spadina Avenue; this is where Toronto's Fashion District began its journey.

History

The origins of Toronto's Fashion District start in the 1920s and used to be situated around King Street and Spadina Ave. Called 'The Garment District', it was the centre for fashion and textiles and many of the original building, plus their store signs, still stand today. In fact, they built a giant thimble in honour of the old Toronto Fashion area.

In the 1950s when the Jewish community that used to inhabit Spadina Ave and Kensington Market moved to Bathurst Street. Many of the immigrants were seamstresses or tailors and opened up their own businesses in the location now known as the Fashion District.

Culture

Toronto's Fashion District has a unique and chic culture attached to it. Being the fashion centre of not only Toronto but also Canada, the Fashion District brings artsy, trendy, and urban shoppers to its region. The residents are hip and the prices of everything tends to be on the expensive side.

Shopping

Shopping in the Fashion District can be both rewarding and expensive. It is the place you go when looking for the latest trends,in the stores and on the people walking around.

Along with the obvious clothing stores, you can also find fabrics, leathers, furs, and other related materials needed in making clothes.

You can find all kinds of materials, clothing, and accessories in wholesale and retail. Many manufacturers are available in the Toronto's Fashion District as well. The kind of retail stores you can find are bridal stores, women's apparel, men's apparel, accessories, shoes, and many other boutique shops.

You can also find independent stores who sell local or upcoming designers. Toronto's Fashion District is a place fashion experimentation -- find the styles that fit your personality through any of Toronto's fashion stores and businesses.

You can learn more about the businesses in this area from the Queen St West Business Improvement Area! The official website is www.queenstwestbia.ca.

Cuisine & Nightlife

After a long day of shopping, rest your heels at one of the Fashion District restaurants, bars, or pubs. There is also a Queen Street Market that is the equivalent of a food court. There are many different cuisine styles such as Japanese, cafes, Italian, delis, bistros.

When you are done with your meal but have a good night, Toronto's Fashion District has some great venues in its nightlife. There are some fantastic pubs and bars that reach out to the trendy and chic community.

There are also some great clubs in the area, especially since the 1990s when the punk and Goth movement found a home in the surrounding neighbourhood.

Entertainment in the Fashion District includes the Scotiabank Theatre, watch a movie with friends!

Heritage Site

In 2008, the Fashion District suffered through a severe fire. It destroyed 14 units along Queen Street West near Portland Street. This is even more unfortunate since a year earlier the area had been labelled a heritage site. Some of the department stores never fully recovered from the blaze.

Real Estate

Real estate in Toronto's Fashion District is very popular, the culture is rich with fashion, trends, and class, and the residents only add to this.

The most popular style of homes to those in the Fashion District are the chic lofts. The prices are expensive but worth it, especially when you walk out onto the Fashion District every morning.

For those looking to rent, you can find some great houses, apartments, lofts, and condominiums that are reasonably priced for the location.

Toronto's Fashion District has a range of sizes, prices, and number of rooms, find an apartment for $1100/month or a 4 bedroom home for rent for $5000/month.

The Fashion District is a place of trends, fashion, and chic culture. It is the place you go to find the outfit of your dreams. It is also the place Toronto visits to find all the supplies one would need to design and create their own pieces.
