Totally Toronto: About Toronto : Neighbourhoods : Danforth Village

Danforth Village

Danforth Avenue is a vibrant commercial street running across the east end of Toronto that is divided up into a variety of neighbourhoods. Danforth Village is one of these; a busy retail district with a multi-cultural personality.

The Danforth Village Business Improvement Area comprises the portion of Danforth Avenue roughly from Westlake Avenue on the west end to Victoria Park Avenue on the east end. You can get more information on this BIA by visiting www.dvbia.ca.

Location & History

It is situated on the western edge of the old city of Toronto, not far from Scarborough. To the east down Danforth Avenue is the Crossroads of the Danforth, while to the west is the Danforth Mosaic area.

Danforth Village has quite a bit of history behind it, having been settled back in the 19th century and having undergone several significant re-developments in the course of becoming the popular shopping area it is today.

While there are many small businesses throughout the district, the major draw is the several big retail chain stores, most of which make up part of the large shopping centre called Shoppers World Danforth.

Danforth Village is easily accessible to the rest of the city by TTC subway, specifically the east-west Bloor-Danforth Line. There are two stops on that line here, Main Street Station and Victoria Park Station

Several bus and streetcar routes also serve the neighbourhood, connecting it with the subway line. There is also a GO Transit railway station here, the Danforth GO Station, located just south of Danforth off of Main Street.

Shopping

As mentioned previously, Danforth Village is a significant shopping attraction, with over 200 street-front stores, restaurants and pubs along this 3km length of Danforth Avenue.

The biggest retailers are found in and around Shoppers World, including Canadian Tire, Metro, Staples, Zellers, and Shoppers Drug Mart (which actually took its name from the mall). In total there are over 40 businesses in the shopping centre, and many more nearby.

In addition to the larger retailers, there are also a number of smaller specialty shops in the area which cover a wide range of products and services.

For example, there are pet stores (Jeff's Bark & Scratch), sewing shops (Sewing World), arts and crafts stores (House of Embroideries & Crafts), and home improvement (Urban Kitchen & Bath), as well as some stranger ones (Psychic Centre & Book Shop). There is also a wide range of services here, from accountants to doctors and dentists.

Restaurants & Cuisine

For those hungry after a strenuous shopping adventure, the area has many restaurants and eateries available. While there are your fast food chains (Subway, Popeye's Chicken & Biscuits, Burger King), the real appeal are the many great local restaurants and take-out spots.

There is a huge variety of choice, including Chinese, Caribbean, Indian, Pakistani, and Japanese; no doubt a reflection of the neighbourhood's multicultural demographics.

At the corner of Main Street and Danforth, Sultan Shawarma & Falafel offers fast and inexpensive shawarma and falafel sandwiches. Danforth Roti Shop and Cool Runnings Restaurant are two of the neighbourhood's most popular joints for Caribbean food, particularly rotis.

Mr. Tasty Burger Drive In is where to go to get some beef on a bun, while Duckworth's Fish & Chips is a well-liked local spot for fried fish.

Nightlife

The area has a small nightlife, mostly low-key bar and grills appealing to locals out for casual beers. Noah's Ark Tavern and Pentagram Bar & Grill are two places to grab a drink, while Eva's Bar & Restaurant is also a popular place to go the next day after a night out, thanks to its all-day breakfast.
